Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" has grossed "911 million dollars" worldwide over three weekends in theaters, moving closely toward the coveted "1 billion dollar" mark, according to data from The Numbers. Furthermore, the film has become Nolan's highest-grossing project in India, surpassing the total earnings of "Oppenheimer" in the country.
The epic adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek poem grossed "264.1 million dollars" worldwide on its premiere day on July 17, and the "700 million dollar" mark was surpassed on just the twelfth day of screenings. According to the latest data, the film has earned "395.5 million dollars" in the US and "515.9 million dollars" outside the country. Given the current momentum, analysts and industry representatives consider reaching the "1 billion dollar" mark almost certain.
The film, shot with a reported budget of "250 million dollars", has already surpassed "Oppenheimer" in total global box office earnings ("975 million dollars"), making it the highest-grossing film of Nolan's career.
In India, "Odyssey" overtook "Oppenheimer" to become Nolan's highest-grossing film in the country. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film's earnings in India exceeded "170 crore rupees" by the third week, with net earnings reaching approximately "150 crore rupees". The English-language version accounts for the bulk of the box office, maintaining high occupancy rates even after the premiere of the new competitor – Marvel's "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse".
On its first day of screenings in India, the film grossed "17.40 crore rupees" in net earnings, and by the first week, gross earnings exceeded "100 crore rupees". Premium formats, especially IMAX, played a key role in maintaining stable revenues – with repeat viewings providing additional box office above opening weekend figures.
In "Odyssey", Matt Damon plays the role of Odysseus, and the rest of the cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, and Elliot Page. The film's success shows that the Indian audience is increasingly willing to visit large-scale Hollywood productions in premium formats – a trend that Nolan's films have been actively fueling since "Interstellar" and the premiere of "Oppenheimer" in 2023.
