Critical wildfire situation in Southern Europe
Southern Europe is facing a devastating wave of wildfires after record-high temperatures turned the region into a "powder keg." According to data from The Guardian, thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes, escaping the raging inferno.
"Never before, at least in the last 20 years, have 11,000 hectares burned this early in the summer," researcher Julien Ruffault told Le Monde.
The scale of the disaster
- Portugal, Spain, France, and Greece: Over 20,000 hectares of land are engulfed in flames.
- Southern France: More than 10,000 people have been evacuated due to wildfires that have spiraled out of control.
- International aid: Portugal is already receiving reinforcements in the fight against the fire, which has been raging for the third day.
Climate change as a primary driver
High-pressure weather systems, intensified by human activity and greenhouse gas emissions, are leading to the third heatwave of the summer. Temperatures in Southwestern France are expected to reach a critical 40 °C.
Experts are categorical: fire seasons are becoming more intense, longer, and more extreme. Land-use policies will be a key factor for future adaptation to these new climatic realities.
