Veselin Kalanovski and Mariela Topalova will play the roles of Ivo Obretenovich and Elisaveta in the upcoming play "The Peach Thief", based on the novel of the same name by Emiliyan Stanev. The premiere is planned for October 27th on the stage of the NHK Cultural Center.
The direction and dramatization are the work of Boyko Iliev. The scenography and costumes are entrusted to Nikol Trendafilova.
Boris Atanasov, Detelin Kandev, Stefka Zlatkova, and Stefan Metodiev will also participate in the production.
"There is nothing more grievous than the repetition of the past" – these words of Emiliyan Stanev set the tone for the play.
Two epochs, distant from each other in time, but united by common sufferings - wars, epidemics, droughts, and misery - unfold before the audience. The atmosphere around is saturated with tension, as if the stage itself is pulsating with tension.
In this world, steeped in cruelty, madness, and disease, a beautiful, timeless, burning love is born. It is the product of man's natural striving for happiness and freedom, for making sense of the absurd everyday life. But this love is violently interrupted amidst the chaos of war and the epidemic, at a time when human kindness seems to be erased from the face of the world.
The novel by Emiliyan Stanev, known for its psychological depth, poetic quality, and insight, is at the heart of this play. The heroes of the tragic and emotionally charged love story - Elisaveta, Ivo Obretenovich, the Colonel, the Teacher, the Orderly, and the Mother - reveal to the audience a world in which love, though secret, is the only force capable of giving meaning to suffering, of reviving and elevating the human spirit.
