The British comedy "Shirley Valentine" by playwright Willy Russell opens in Burgas tonight, 27 October, at 7.30pm at the State Puppet Theatre, the Youth Theatre School in Burgas said.
The school is staging the play, and Rumen Velev directs. Young actress Vladislava Yoncheva takes the lead role. Burgas audiences know her from the comedy "Same Time, Next Year".
Where it began: 'Shirley Valentine' premieres in Burgas on October 27 at the Puppet Theatre
Yoncheva plays a woman with a seemingly ordinary life who can still dream and is gathering the courage to turn it in a new direction. The play is about a person stuck in daily routine and the moment she dares to listen to her own wishes. The school says it has humour, self-irony and sadness. It asks how funny, confused and inspired a person becomes when she decides to break free from the "pendulum" of routine.
"Shirley Valentine" is one of the best-loved modern British comedies. Russell's script won the Laurence Olivier Award for best new comedy and was nominated for a Tony for best play. It has also won other international awards.
The second premiere performance is on 17 November, again at 7.30pm at the Puppet Theatre.
