Regardless of its relatively low international ranking, Bulgaria demonstrates a surprising proximity to European standards in the field of charitable giving. According to expert data, our country ranks 61st among 101 countries, but the percentage of donors reaches an impressive 57%, which is extremely close to the European average of 59%.
Leading experts from the "BCause" foundation reveal an in-depth analysis of motivational models among Bulgarian citizens. Lyudmila Atanasova, NPO Programs Director, emphasizes the characteristic features of the national donation culture, which are distinguished by an emotional and situational nature.
The study, carried out by the British organization "Charity Help" for the sixteenth consecutive year, reveals interesting social patterns. Bulgarians are inclined to donate mainly in extreme circumstances - during natural disasters or in acute need of support for specific individuals.
At the same time, experts identify a significant deficit in long-term donation engagement. Only 5% of the population have the status of permanent donors, which contrasts with practices in other European countries. This phenomenon is due to a relatively weak sense of community belonging.
A eloquent example of altruism is the case of 11-year-old Mihaela, who donates her own hair to make wigs for cancer patients, demonstrating an individual impulse of compassion.
