The team behind the "Hot Food Truck" charity is raising money for a new vehicle to keep the project going, Deyan Petrov reports. For the seventh year running, free meals are handed out in the yard of Alexandrovska Hospital every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
Volunteers cook the food themselves and hand it out to people in serious need. Most of those who come are homeless, and all they're asked to do is bring their own container. The volunteers greet them with a smile, and people sit nearby to eat.
Petrov says what they've managed so far gives them the confidence to ask for help again. The goal, he told BNT, is "to raise money and buy a truck that's tougher, one that can handle these hard conditions better."
Since the project began, it has reached more than 120,000 people. The Orthodox Youth Community also takes part in handing out the food. Venelin, a volunteer with the group, says his biggest reward is seeing people happy and helping them. Another volunteer says people leave satisfied: "We do it with love."
One of the first people to ever show up, who has been coming since the project started, will turn 82 right there this year. For her, the yard isn't just about food — it's a place to meet people she knows, to talk, to share personal problems, memories and hopes. "It's paradise now. So many people I know come here, people I'd otherwise have nowhere to meet and talk to," she told BNT.
