In Dresden, an unprecedented trial begins that shakes political circles in Germany. The central figure in the case is Jian G - an employee of the far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), accused of prolonged espionage in favor of Chinese intelligence.
According to the prosecution, the defendant - a German Chinese citizen whose identity is kept secret under local legislation - worked as an assistant to European parliamentarian Maximilian Krah. From 2019 to 2024, he systematically collected classified information from the European Parliament.
Prosecutor Stephan Morweiser described the case as "extremely serious", emphasizing China's extensive intelligence interests in political, military, and economic issues in the European Union.
The specific charges include: • Collecting confidential documents from parliamentary consultations • Espionage against Chinese dissidents in Germany • Compromising personal data of leading political figures
Alongside Jian G, a second defendant, Jaqi X, sits on the defendant's bench - an employee at a company servicing Leipzig airport logistics. She is accused of assisting in obtaining strategic information about military transports and passengers.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry categorically rejected the accusations, describing the arrest as an attempt to "discredit and suppress" the country. Official Beijing insists there is no evidence of espionage.
Maximilian Krah, directly affected by the investigation, has already left his position in the European Parliament. Elected to the Bundestag in February, he describes the accusations as "absurd and politically motivated".
The trial is expected to continue until the end of September, with numerous witnesses to be questioned. The case is viewed as a precedent that could have serious geopolitical consequences for relations between the European Union and China.
International security experts are already defining the case as indicative of the behind-the-scenes intelligence wars being waged between major geopolitical players. German authorities are demonstrating a firm stance against attempts at external interference in their political processes.
