Residents and business representatives in Sveti Vlas are organizing a protest following the breakdown at the “Elenite” wastewater treatment plant on August 12, which led to a fivefold exceedance of pollution limits and the temporary closure of “Iztok” beach. The incident caused severe financial losses and a decline in tourists at the height of the season. Although the Burgas Regional Health Inspectorate lifted the swimming ban on August 20, after the fault was repaired and levels returned to normal, the damages incurred sparked serious discontent among those whose livelihood depends entirely on tourism.

The protesters are demanding the urgent construction of a modern and higher-capacity wastewater treatment plant to serve Sveti Vlas and the surrounding region. A petition is also being gathered in support of this demand. The initiative is entirely grassroots, involving local residents, property owners, business representatives, and everyone who demands a cleaner Black Sea.

The demonstration is scheduled for 9:00 AM on the Burgas-Varna bypass road near the village of Kosharitsa. Organizers confirmed that District Governor Diko Dikov and the director of “ViK-Burgas” Zlatina Dimitrova will be present on-site to answer questions from the protesters regarding the case.
