On Monday, the lawyers for the presidential administration and Harvard University will face each other in a Boston court, with over 2 billion dollars in federal subsidies and fundamental academic freedoms at stake.
The White House introduced drastic restrictive measures, including freezing more than 1.5 billion pounds of state funding. The main goal of these actions is to force the university to change its hiring, admission, and teaching policies, with an emphasis on combating antisemitism and reviewing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
As additional pressure, the Trump administration took steps to limit Harvard's access to the international student visa system, which further complicates the academic situation.
In response, the university filed lawsuits and insists on an express decision through a simplified procedure – a process that allows for a quick resolution based on established facts without a full trial.
The case will be reviewed by federal judge Alison Burroughs, who has already issued interim decisions in favor of Harvard in previous cases related to international student education.
Although an immediate decision after one-day hearings is unlikely, the university's lawyers insist on an opinion before September 3rd – the deadline set by the administration for fulfilling financial commitments.
Harvard's legal experts argue that the White House's actions represent an unconstitutional interference that violates the fundamental principles of free speech and academic autonomy.
On their part, representatives of the Department of Justice emphasize that funding is provided under strictly defined conditions that require adherence to state policy.
President Trump hints that these actions are part of a broader negotiation strategy, expressing confidence that an agreement with the university will eventually be reached.
This conflict is seen as an element of broader efforts to exert pressure on Ivy League elite universities, with similar actions being taken against other higher education institutions like Columbia University.
