Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency (NRA) is joining price checks run by the Agriculture Ministry, the Food Safety Agency and the Consumer Protection Commission, Agriculture Minister Plamen Abrovski said. He said prices in Bulgaria have not been rising since November 2025.
Inspectors are looking for unjustified markups at every step of the supply chain, from the producer to the retail chains. The aim is to find out what products really cost to make, where markups build up and how much each middleman adds to the final price.
Abrovski said the NRA is the only body in Bulgaria that can break a price down into its parts and show how much of it is fuel, electricity and markup. A high final price does not necessarily mean the last seller in the chain added an unjustified markup, he said.
The minister said widespread price rises began after the convergence report in 2024. The euro law, passed in August that year, had no brake, ban or penalty against raising prices, Abrovski said.
In August this year, the ban on unjustified price rises was extended by another year. The minister said this was done to prevent economically unjustified price rises.
Abrovski called curbing prices a long process, because the whole supply chain has to be traced.
