Agriculture minister Plamen Abrovski is in Luxembourg for a meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, which runs today and tomorrow, the ministry press office said.
The main topic is the regulation on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2027. It sets the terms on which the EU gives CAP support.
At an open session, farm ministers from member states will try to agree a partial general approach to the European Commission's proposal. That would be a partial negotiating position of member states on the regulation.
According to the EU Council, the Commission wants a simpler, more flexible framework and guaranteed incomes for farmers. Payments should be better targeted and fairer, and more young people should be drawn into farming.
Other goals include support for risk management and for farms to cope better with shocks. The proposal also seeks a better balance between common rules and incentives for the climate, the environment and animal welfare, the Council says on its website.
The ministers will also discuss trade in farm products. The topic comes up regularly at Council meetings, most recently in July.
