Bulgarian MFA warns against travel to Bangladesh due to Dhaka

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria has warned Bulgarian citizens to avoid travel to Bangladesh. The warning was published on the official website of the ministry. The reason for this is the worsened conditions in the capital Dhaka, the department reports.

Reaffirming the seriousness of the situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs draws attention to the unrest that has arisen in Dhaka. These are the result of a decision by the judicial institutions in Bangladesh. The decision, which is at the heart of the tension, provides for a death sentence. It was imposed against the former Prime Minister of the country, Sheikh Hasina.

According to information provided by the German Press Agency (DPA), Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death yesterday. The sentence is for crimes committed during the repressions against student riots. These events occurred last year, when Hasina's government was overthrown. It is noted that this is the first death sentence for a former government leader in Bangladesh. The country has a turbulent political history, which is marked by the assassinations of two presidents. Among them is Sheikh Hasina's father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, killed in 1975.
