Technological development in the transport sector must take place under clear rules and guaranteed safety. This was stated by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Georgi Peev, during an informal meeting of EU transport ministers held in Dublin, according to the ministry's press center.

During the meeting, transport ministers discussed topics related to digitalization, road safety, and measures to address the consequences of the fuel crisis.

While discussing innovation and road safety, Peev emphasized the opportunities offered by connected and autonomous vehicles. He noted that Bulgaria supports the development of a common European approach called the "Single System," but clarified that the introduction of new technologies must be gradual and only after their safety has been proven.

According to the minister, the creation of a separate European agency should be considered. This agency would coordinate the oversight of new technologies and support legislative changes in this field.

During discussions regarding the energy shock and its impact on transport, Peev stated that Bulgaria supports coordinated action at the European Union level. According to him, such measures will help maintain transport connectivity in Europe and support the competitiveness of European carriers in international markets, the ministry's press center added.

In the part of the discussion dedicated to the green transition, the minister highlighted the importance of investing in clean technologies and the decarbonization of the transport sector. "These investments will lead to a reduction in external energy dependencies — a step that is a direct matter of security today," said Georgi Peev.

BTA recalls that last Friday, the government announced a package of measures related to high fuel prices, totaling over 300 million euros. Part of these measures includes the removal of the excise duty on propane-butane. Further support is also planned through subsidies for key sectors, including public transport, as well as student and medical transport.
