With his "Yin-Yang" panel, an original artistic interpretation of the ancient symbol, craftsman Stanko Kirov from Bulgarovo won first place in the "Artistic Form" category at the 6th World Wicker and Basketry Festival in Nowy Tomyśl, Poland. The work was created using willow and wicker, weaving together various traditional techniques that transform the classic craft into a modern art form and reveal the potential of natural materials far beyond their usual applications. Entries in this category are evaluated by an international jury that reviews original works prepared in advance by the participants.

This significant recognition was won in fierce competition against artists from dozens of countries spanning six continents. This year, the forum, which is held every three years, brought together 132 participants from 65 countries. The event in Poland—a country with a rich history in wicker weaving—has established itself as a leading platform for the exchange of ideas and for tracking contemporary trends in this rare craft. For Stanko Kirov, who was the sole Bulgarian representative at this year's edition, this marks his second appearance at the global forum.

For 30 years, Kirov has dedicated himself to basketry, striving to preserve and promote it. His efforts are of particular importance, as the craft is currently on the verge of extinction in Bulgaria, with only about a dozen masters still practicing it professionally. Stanko Kirov frequently participates in demonstrations and festivals, where he passes on centuries-old skills and showcases the modern face of this art form. His mission is fully reflected in his motto: "Basketry may not be the most important activity in a person's life, but it is unacceptable not to make an effort to preserve and develop the knowledge of the craft accumulated over the centuries!"

The first prize won in Poland is not just a personal distinction for the master, but an important confirmation of the significance of his work, thanks to which a Bulgarian craft at risk of being forgotten has received well-deserved recognition on the world stage.
