March 2026 will bring warmer than usual days in a large part of Europe, but also sharp cold snaps, "crazy" weather and contrasts for Bulgaria.

March 2026 is approaching with the reputation of a month in which winter and spring are fighting a fierce battle for supremacy. In Europe as a whole, forecasters expect a warmer background than usual, but with sudden changes, while for Bulgaria, meteorologists are talking about a "crazy" month with rapid changes between sun, rain and snow.

Europe: spring earlier, but with "nervous" twists

Long-term climate models for the end of winter and the beginning of spring indicate that a large part of the continent will remain under the influence of a positive temperature anomaly. According to seasonal forecasts for February–March–April 2026, the temperature regime will most likely be above the climatic norm, but this does not mean stable and calm weather.

Meteorologists from different countries warn that spring may turn out to be "nervous", with a series of warm and cold waves, alternation of thaws, wet snow and short-term returns of winter cold. The analyzes emphasize that the positive anomaly is not a guarantee for a smooth transition to spring, but rather a background against which sharp atmospheric changes will develop.

It is expected that the climatic spring in a large part of Europe will begin earlier than the calendar one, with the stable positive temperatures having a chance to establish themselves at the end of March. At the same time, it is emphasized that against the background of global warming, the atmosphere remains unstable and individual episodes of severe cold, snowfall and strong wind are quite possible even after the onset of the vernal equinox.

Central Europe: periods of high pressure and risk of sudden cooling

For Central Europe, and especially for Germany, meteorologists outline an interesting scenario. According to meteorologist Jörg Jung, "several long-term forecasts show that high pressure zones may establish themselves over Central Europe in March", which will lead to prolonged dry periods and many sunny days.

With such a configuration in the atmosphere, milder air masses from the southwest can rush into the region, and daytime temperatures can rise significantly above 10 degrees and even higher in individual areas. Thus, March can sometimes feel almost like April, especially in the cities in the western and southwestern parts of Germany.

However, Jung warns that this does not exclude sharp reversals. He notes that "even if the high pressure periods seem likely, a sudden change in the weather can occur at any moment within a few days". If cold air from the north or east suddenly rushes into Central Europe, temperatures can quickly drop to single digits above zero, night frosts can return and even light snowfall can appear.

Where in Europe can early spring warming be felt

Against the background of unstable weather in the northern and central parts of the continent, southern Europe traditionally offers more chances for sun and comfortable temperatures at the beginning of March. In some Mediterranean cities, thermometers can rise to around 18 degrees.

In Italy, for example, Catania on the island of Sicily is among the places that attract tourists looking for early spring warming. For the city, it is pointed out that the average maximum temperature in March reaches about 18 degrees, which allows for pleasant walks, even when the surrounding peaks of Etna are still snowy. Similar values can be expected in other parts of Southern Italy, as well as in individual areas of Spain and Portugal.

Bulgaria: meteorologist Petar Yankov warned of a "crazy" March

In Bulgaria, March traditionally bears the epithet "female" month because of the whims and rapidly changing weather, and the forecast for 2026 fully confirms this reputation. Meteorologist Petar Yankov warned that " Bulgarians can expect crazy weather in March", in which we will see sun, rain, snow and temperatures up to around 20 degrees within a few days.

According to him, a short-term warming and the apparent onset of spring temperatures are expected at the beginning of the month. "At the beginning of March, warming and an apparent entry into spring temperatures are expected. Until Wednesday, temperatures will fluctuate from 11 to 17 degrees", says Yankov.

A cooling will follow after this first milder period. "On Thursday and Friday, cooling is forecast with precipitation in the western regions, mainly rain, in the Rila and Pirin mountains – wet snow. Precipitation is not expected in Central and Northern Bulgaria and in Dobrudzha", the meteorologist adds. Thus, in the first third of the month, the country will go through the classic March contrasts between spring and winter.

What do the average values for March in Bulgaria show

The climatic statistics and long-term forecasts for March 2026 suggest that on a national scale Bulgaria will be rather cool, but not truly wintery. The average temperature for the country in March is expected to be around 9 degrees, with daily maximums around 12 degrees and night minimums close to 4 degrees.

The number of sunshine hours is expected to be around 4 per day, and the monthly amount of precipitation will reach approximately 146 mm, with about 23 rainy days for the month. On the Black Sea coast, the sea water temperature will remain low – around 13 degrees, which does not allow swimming, but creates conditions for fresh walks along the coast.

More detailed forecasts for individual cities show significant regional differences. For example, the daily maximum temperatures in Varna for March 2026 are expected to be around 11 degrees, while in the interior, in Veliko Tarnovo, the values can reach around 15 degrees. In Vidin, a daily maximum of around 15 degrees is also predicted, which is indicative of the warmer days in Northwestern Bulgaria.

Sofia and the mountains: from sunny days to wet snow

The capital Sofia, located in a valley and surrounded by mountains, traditionally feels the full range of March whims. The forecasts for March 2026 outline an alternation of milder weather with daytime temperatures around and above 10 degrees with periods of cooling, increased cloud cover, rain and wet snow.

The dynamic circulation over the Balkans means that with the invasion of colder air from the north or northwest, the precipitation in the Sofia field and in the high neighborhoods can easily turn into snow. At the same time, with southern and southwestern currents, temperatures in the capital rise quickly, the streets dry up, and the parks begin to fill with people even before the astronomical spring.

What should Bulgarians expect from the "female" March

The general picture for March 2026 shows that Bulgaria will be under the influence of the increasingly pronounced spring warming, but without completely giving up on winter surprises. When the first warmer wave comes with temperatures between 11 and 17 degrees, many people will rush to take out lighter clothes, but the forecasts suggest that this premature feeling of spring can be quickly cooled by a new cooling.

The scenario for a "crazy" March means that within a few days we can go from sunny afternoons with over 15 degrees to gloomy, windy days with precipitation and temperatures around zero in the high fields and in the mountains. Therefore, experts advise people to follow the current forecasts daily and prepare for rapid changes in clothing and road conditions.

On the European background, Bulgaria is no exception to the trend towards a warmer, but also more variable spring. In the context of global warming and more frequent climatic anomalies, March 2026 will probably be remembered as a month of strong contrasts: from almost summer temperatures at noon to winter scenes in the mountains only days later.

Да, наистина доста време има до тогава. Но все пак си заслужава да сме информирани за тенденциите, макар и прогнози да са. Важно е да следим какво се случва с климата навсякъде – и в Европа
