Video: the week's key stories in 250 seconds

The "Sveta Anastasia" Children's Hospital in Burgas discharged its first patient, and on her birthday at that. A ten-year-old girl celebrated her special day in the Pediatrics Clinic among the team treating her: pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Hristo Naydenov, pediatricians Dr. Daniel Zhelev and Dr. Marieta Dineva, nurse Fatme Ahmed and health assistant Hristiyana Peycheva. Early in the morning they prepared a surprise with gifts, among them the "Tree of Life", a plant for the child to grow at home. With this, the new hospital has its first discharged child, and the clinic is already admitting and treating patients. From now on, parents in Burgas and the region can take their sick child for care in the city without having to travel.

First discharged child and an SUV flipped onto its roof near "Metro"

The week also brought a crash that many Burgas residents saw with their own eyes, because it happened at one of the busiest roundabouts in the city. At the intersection of "Stefan Stambolov" Blvd. and "Transportna" St., near "Metro", a Volkswagen with Turkish registration entered the roundabout from the boulevard and hit a Toyota with Burgas plates. The impact flipped the SUV onto its roof. Behind its wheel was a woman from Burgas, who climbed out of the car on her own without serious injuries. According to her, it all happened in seconds: she was already in the roundabout when the Turkish car cut her off at very high speed and hit her. The woman said she was still shaking. The Turkish driver was also uninjured. The roundabout near "Metro" is among the places where drivers in the city most often complain about speeding and failure to yield.

Nesebar clears the way for the Sveti Vlas and Elenite treatment plant

In Nesebar, municipal councillors gathered for an extraordinary session at the end of September and, with 19 votes "in favour" and not a single one against, unblocked the procedures for the new "Sveti Vlas – Elenite" wastewater treatment plant. They approved changes to the cadastral map of Sveti Vlas and a change in the designated use of municipal properties. The council also gave its consent for a detailed development plan, which includes the routes of the pipes to the plant and the road connection to it. Four municipal properties in the "Aga Cheshme" area will be divided to form new plots, and the change in their designated use has been preliminarily approved. In practice, the council's decision removes the administrative obstacles facing the project, which is meant to stop wastewater from the two resorts reaching the sea untreated. The next steps concern the development plan itself and the construction, for which no deadlines have yet been announced.

Every third child at risk of poverty, while prices for the month dip slightly

The week also brought a worrying figure from the social sphere. Every third child in Bulgaria is at risk of poverty, and the share of people in such a situation is close to 29 percent. This was announced by the chair of the Economic and Social Council, Zornitsa Rusinova, at a public consultation held by the ESC with the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy in the Council of Ministers building. They discussed the risks if the social laws are consolidated into a single code, and what will happen to the size of payments. Trade unions and civic organisations, the government, the ministry and MPs had insisted on the discussion. According to Rusinova, funds under the Persons with Disabilities Act, the Personal Assistance Act and for social benefits have increased a great deal, but the risk of poverty among children remains high. What will go into the code and whether the benefits will be kept at their current size will be decided when the text itself is drafted.

Prices retreated slightly, but only for a month. According to the flash estimate of the National Statistical Institute, in September they were 0.3 percent lower than in August, but compared to September last year they are up by 5.6 percent. The largest monthly decrease was in recreation, sport and culture, by 10.4 percent; restaurants and hotels are 1.1% cheaper after the end of the season, and furnishings and household goods fall by 0.5%. Transport is becoming more expensive, by 3.4% for the month, educational services are up 3.2%, and alcohol and cigarettes by 1.1%. The monthly decline comes from seasonal goods, while the annual bill for households remains more than 5 percent higher.

World gold in the "Mladost" hall

Kristiyan Donchev and Martina Kondaklieva became the first world champions in the history of Bulgarian dancesport. The couple won gold in the Youth category in 10 dances in Burgas's "Mladost" hall, where they competed against 25 couples from 25 countries. Before the title, the two had a series of good results at international tournaments, but the world cup is the first for Bulgaria. In the same weekend, Artur Vlasenko and Ivelina Karcheva took bronze at the WDSF European Championship under 21 in standard dances. The two championships were part of one joint event, which lasted two competition days and brought together over 400 dancers. The organisers were the clubs KST "Burgas" and KST "Burgas 1975".
