Three drones struck a container ship carrying lithium-ion batteries 17 nautical miles from Cape Kaliakra. More than 20 containers fell from the ship into the sea, and some of them contain hazardous substances. All 18 crew members have been rescued.

Five samples along the coast after the strike off Kaliakra

After the strike, experts from the Black Sea Basin Directorate and the Executive Environment Agency (EEA) took seawater samples at five locations along the coast, the Ministry of Environment and Water reported. The sampling points are at Durankulak, Shabla, Cape Kaliakra, Byala and Sozopol. The check covers the coast from the northern border to the southern Black Sea coast, although the ship was struck far to the north.

The samples will be examined by the EEA laboratories in Varna and Burgas. Their results will determine whether the cargo that fell into the sea has polluted the water.

The mayors of Sungurlare and Belitsa are leaving detention

The mayor of Sungurlare Dimitar Gavazov and the mayor of Belitsa Radoslav Revanski remain under house arrest. The Court of Appeal in Burgas ruled this on Thursday, 29 October, after a hearing at 14:00 in courtroom No. 2. The court overturned the ruling of the District Court, which on 22 October had imposed on them the strictest measure, detention in custody.

The two were detained in GDBOP operations. The prosecution accuses them of participating in a criminal conspiracy for influence peddling in public procurement under Art. 321, para. 6 of the Criminal Code. The defense appealed the detention and requested a lighter measure, and the second-instance decision is final.

The case also had repercussions outside the courtroom. Residents of Sungurlare and Belitsa protested in front of the court in support of their detained mayors. Prime Minister Rumen Radev and the DPS entered a new dispute, not the first between them, and Radev urged more people to speak out. From the parliamentary rostrum, Kalin Stoyanov of the DPS displayed letters between the director of the Burgas prison and the two municipalities.

The measure for the two mayors is final, but the public procurement case against them continues.

4,700 violations at the resorts and a cigarette factory in Karnobat

Labor inspectors have found 4,700 violations along the Black Sea coast at seasonal sites this summer. Most often, people worked without an employment contract, explained the director of the Labor Inspectorate in Burgas Pavlin Vaskov. Next come violations of working hours, and then those concerning pay. Cases of minors hired without a permit are also frequent.

The violations are "distributed fairly evenly," Vaskov told BNR. Those concerning labor relations are slightly more numerous than violations of the law on safe working conditions. Earlier the inspectorate had reported over 4,600 violations, so by the end of the inspections their number kept growing. Anyone who works without a contract is left without social security contributions, and this affects their pension and sick leave.

In Karnobat, GDBOP, the Border Police and DANS discovered, in a joint operation, an illegal cigarette factory in a hall at a warehouse base. In the hall the investigators found machines, equipment and materials for a full closed production cycle. The man with the initials M.D., charged in connection with the factory, is in custody for up to 72 hours by order of the Burgas District Prosecutor's Office.

According to the prosecution, he made tobacco products of various brands in order to put them on the market without the required permit. The charge is under Art. 234, para. 2 of the Criminal Code and covers the period from an unspecified date to 28 October 2026. If the prosecution requests a longer-term measure, the decision will be made by the court.
