Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz following a cargo ship incident

The Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz is closed until further notice, following an incident involving a cargo ship that attempted to pass through the area via an unauthorized route.

According to a statement broadcast by Iranian state television IRIB, warning shots were fired at the vessel after it turned off its transponder, thereby endangering the safety of navigation in one of the world's most sensitive maritime corridors.

"Warning shots were fired in the direction of a vessel that turned off its transponder, thereby putting the safety of navigation at risk. The vessel was stopped," the IRGC statement said.

The Corps' naval forces emphasize that the temporary closure of the strait is intended to ensure security in the region while all circumstances surrounding the incident are clarified and the potential risk of further violations is assessed.

The statement also issues a clear warning to potential external interference: "If the enemy uses this incident as a pretext and takes any wrong step, it will face a crushing response."

The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime passage through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes. Its closure, even temporarily, traditionally raises serious concerns regarding global energy markets and the security of shipping in the Persian Gulf region.
