Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Nikolay Koprinkov held a coordination meeting at the Council of Ministers focused on preventive measures against flooding. The discussion was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Galab Donev, Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova, Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovski, and Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev. The meeting also included all regional governors, the leadership of the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB), and representatives of the relevant state authorities.
An analysis by the River Basin Directorates has identified 210 critical river sections with obstructed flow. In 168 of these, the presence of tree and shrub vegetation was established, and in some riverbeds, deposits of sand and gravel were found. Additionally, household waste pollution was registered in 3% of the specified locations.
The measures are planned to be divided into short-term, aimed at preparing for the autumn season, and long-term. The latter include legislative changes intended to provide local authorities with more effective tools for maintaining riverbeds. During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the role of regional governors, who are expected to coordinate the actions of mayors and institutions both during preventive activities and in the event of potential crisis situations.
