The Stroke and Aphasia Association (SAA) is urging people to learn the early signs of a stroke and to call 112 straight away if they notice any of them. The appeal comes on the eve of World Stroke Day on 29 October.
The association is repeating two messages: spotting symptoms early and acting fast save lives and prevent severe disability. The SAA says the patient's dignity and the daily life of the whole family are at stake.
A stroke can hit anyone at any age, and every second counts, the association says.
The FAST test was created as a step towards prevention. The letters stand for the English words Face, Arms, Speech and Time. It checks for the three most common symptoms of a stroke.
There are other signs too that people should not ignore, the SAA warns.
