"Spider-Man: A New Day" impresses critics with a more mature and realistic tone

"Spider-Man: A New Day" hits theaters against a backdrop of very strong early reviews. Tom Holland steps into the role of Spider-Man for the fourth time, and the film already began screenings in select markets on July 29, including the UK and the Philippines. The wide global release starts on July 31.

The story takes place after the events of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" from 2021. Peter Parker lives in isolation after Doctor Strange's spell erased the memory of him from the minds of the entire world. In "A New Day," he is left without money, alone, and fully dedicates himself to fighting crime - a plot well known to long-time comic book fans.

A more grounded Spider-Man

Early reviews describe the film as the most realistic and mature of all those in which Holland has played Spider-Man. "The Post Philippines" defines it as "one of the best Marvel films since 'Avengers: Endgame' and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'," noting that Holland conveys "Peter's grief and loneliness without losing the warmth and hope that have always made Spider-Man special."

It is worth noting that the film lacks the multiverse versions of the characters played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, which were a key part of "No Way Home." Instead, Bruce Banner, Frank Castle, and Yelena Belova appear as supporting characters. Sadie Sink also participates in the film as Jean Grey, which marks an important connection to the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

New abilities and future hints

In the film, Peter Parker develops new abilities because the spider's DNA begins to dominate his human nature. Among them are organic webbing, sharpened senses that go beyond the known "spider-sense," and greater agility, which gives his fighting style a more predatory edge. His struggle to master these increasingly powerful capabilities is one of the central conflicts in the plot.

A post-credits scene hints at future events in the MCU. In it, Ned Leeds' tracker loses Peter's signal on Earth, after which the marker appears somewhere in outer space - and the words "Spider-Man will return" appear on the screen. According to "The Express," this scene hints at the events in "Avengers: Secret Wars," rather than "Avengers: Doomsday," which is scheduled for release in December 2026.

Holland's future

Holland, who turned 30 in June, confirmed that he is ready to continue playing Spider-Man. "I'll play this role for as long as they want," he told "The Hollywood Reporter." "So if the film performs well, we'll see!"
