Romania scrambled fighter jets and a helicopter due to a drone detected near Ukraine

Romania activated its air force after radar systems detected a suspicious aerial target near the border with Ukraine. The incident occurred in the eastern Tulcea county and triggered a rapid response from the Ministry of National Defense and emergency services.

According to official information, the Ministry of Defense's radar surveillance system registered an aerial target at approximately 1:20 PM, about 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian town of Vylkove. The National Military Command Center immediately notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, which in turn sent a warning to the population in Tulcea county via the "RO-Alert" system at 2:09 PM.

In response to the detected target, two British Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled; they are stationed at the Fetesti air base and are conducting air policing missions over Romania. In parallel, a Romanian Air Force Puma helicopter took off at 2:10 PM with the task of monitoring the aerial situation along the border with Ukraine.

The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that during the operation, "no instances of unauthorized entry into national airspace or cases of aircraft impact with the ground were recorded." Thus, although the measures were significant, the situation did not escalate into an actual incident on Romanian territory.

The case and the authorities' response once again demonstrate the increased sensitivity and readiness for action of countries in the region regarding any suspicious activity near the border with Ukraine, especially in the context of the ongoing war and the frequent cases of drones and other aircraft in border areas.
