The "Education" Syndicate to the Confederation of Labour "Podkrepa" has categorically rejected the proposal for the school year to begin on September 14. The idea was put forward by a directors' organization, according to the syndicate chaired by Dr. Yuliyan Petrov.

"The syndicate categorically does not accept starting the school year on September 14, as proposed by a directors' organization. Teachers will not participate in this farce. Let those directors who proposed this open the school year themselves," the organization stated. They called on the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) not to count non-working days as part of the holidays and proposed the introduction of a real Christmas break.

Within the framework of the 2027 budget debate, the syndicate will discuss the options provided by the MES. The organization expressed concern that the financial framework plans for a reduction in funding and urged the "Progressive Bulgaria" government to reconsider "education" as a priority.

The union members are insisting on a change to the principle of delegated budgets, proposing the inclusion of a "number of teachers" component alongside the current criteria of student count, class groups, and physical environment. According to them, the unified expenditure standard is inversely proportional to the size of the municipality.

Regarding schools with a high number of Roma students, the syndicate emphasized that teachers are not to blame for irregular class attendance. "The presence of these students in school has been a major challenge for the MES, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy (MLSP), the Ministry of Interior (MoI), the Ministry of Health (MoH), and many municipal institutions," they noted.

The organization also reminded of the commitment for teachers' salaries to reach 125 percent of the average gross salary, stressing that the redistribution of funds from large to small schools must not be permitted amidst a shrinking subsidy.
