Fire in Harmanli: Slightly Elevated Levels of Methane and Carbon Monoxide

Following the fire in Harmanli, which occurred yesterday evening, slightly elevated levels of methane and carbon monoxide in the air have been registered, reported the Regional Inspection for Environment and Water (RIEW) in Haskovo. Experts emphasize that despite the increase, concentrations do not exceed the maximum permissible values for ambient air quality.

The incident, which caused alarm among the local population, started near a car scrapyard and quickly spread, threatening key facilities in the town, including the hospital, sports complex, and villa zone. The fire caused significant damage, destroying several yards and agricultural buildings, as well as out-of-use motor vehicles.

In response to the situation, a team from RIEW - Haskovo immediately took action to assess the environmental impact. The inspection began at 8:00 PM, when the fire was already under control, but residual smoke was still observed in the area. Specialists performed precise measurements with a gas analyzer of the instantaneous values of harmful substance concentrations in the air in the immediate vicinity of the hospital to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

The investigation of the incident revealed that the affected waste treatment site is managed by "Miki Group" Ltd. - Harmanli. The company holds the necessary permit, issued by RIEW-Haskovo, to carry out activities with various types of waste, including those from cars, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, paper, and cardboard. It is important to note that during previous regular control inspections of the site, no violations of the Waste Management Act have been found.

This incident raises questions about the safety of waste treatment facilities and the need for increased control over their activities. Local authorities and environmental organizations are calling for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future that could endanger citizens' health and the environment.

Although the immediate danger has passed, experts from RIEW - Haskovo will continue to closely monitor the situation and perform regular air quality measurements in the area over the coming days.
