Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva supports the proposal for the spring break for the 2026-2027 academic year to be from April 3 to April 11, inclusive. This is stated in an official position sent to the Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Georgi Valchev, the ombudsman's press office announced.
The alternative option, which provides for a break from April 30 to May 9, was criticized by Delcheva. According to her, such a schedule would force students to study intensively for four months without a real vacation.
"According to the proposed schedule, students will go through an extremely long period of four months of intensive study and a continuous educational process – from January 3, 2027, to April 30, 2027, without a real vacation," Delcheva emphasizes.
The Ombudsman points out that the two days between the first and second terms are not enough for recovery. She notes that in May, students already have non-school days due to state matriculation exams and public holidays, which would disrupt the educational process.
"An organization of school time where students are in a continuous educational process for four whole months will not lead to an increase in the quality of Bulgarian education, but quite the contrary," the Ombudsman argues.
The Ministry of Education and Science published the draft school schedule for public discussion in July. It provides for the Christmas and New Year break to be from December 24, 2026, to January 3, 2027, and the mid-term break to be from January 30 to February 2, 2027, inclusive.
