On July 29, the Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of Saint Martyr Callinicus, who lived during the 3rd century in the time of Emperor Decius, known for his persecutions of Christians.
History of the saint
Callinicus was born in the region of Lycaonia, in present-day Turkey. He came from a wealthy pagan family but embraced Christianity and dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel.
He traveled through various towns and villages, where he preached the Christian faith and converted many to it. Because of his refusal to bow to pagan gods, he was captured, brought to trial, and subjected to cruel torture.
Despite his suffering, Callinicus did not renounce his convictions and was sentenced to death by burning. According to church tradition, God took his soul before the flames reached his body.
Folk beliefs
Folk beliefs associate this day with various signs regarding the weather. It is believed that rain on July 29 foretells a wet autumn, while sunny and calm weather is a sign of a good harvest for late grain crops.
If thunder is heard on this day, according to tradition, the autumn will be long and rainy. Therefore, people watched the weather carefully in order to make their predictions for the coming season.
According to custom, on this day it is not good to lend money, use needles and thread, or perform heavy work around the house and in the fields. It was also believed that quarrels with loved ones could bring misunderstanding and failure.
