New president Iliana Iotova will break away from the backing of Rumen Radev, Tsarevo mayor Marin Kirov told Bulgarian National Radio (BNR). He believes Bulgaria will take a leading role in the EU and NATO with her as president.

Kirov is a member of the initiative committee that put forward the Iotova-Valchev ticket for the presidential election. He said the committee included a wide range of people, and each of them helped the candidates in their own way.

"The two of them will become independent and will be able to put this support aside for the sake of the national interest," Kirov said.

He said he took part in the campaign with no conditions attached.

Kirov also spoke about the low turnout.

"The low turnout should be a warning to them, because they set things up in a way that put people off voting," the Tsarevo mayor said.

In his view, voters got no dialogue and no clash of ideas during the campaign, so all politicians should start talking to each other.

Whether the government copes is up to the government itself, Kirov said. He opposes holding presidential and local elections together, because both are majoritarian votes.
