Seven passenger flights in Europe got bomb threats today, and two of them were bound for Sofia. One plane made a forced landing, and fighter jets escorted another to its airport. Searches found no explosives, and all airports are now working normally.
A Wizz Air plane from Bergamo in Italy to Sofia, carrying 176 passengers, received a bomb warning by email, an Interior Ministry spokesman said. A Ryanair flight from Dublin to Sofia with 185 passengers also got a bomb threat. Neither plane was diverted.
LOT flight LO286 from London Heathrow to Warsaw Chopin was diverted to Modlin airport in Warsaw. The bomb warning came at 9:54, and seven minutes later the Boeing 737 MAX, with 181 people on board, landed. Modlin stayed closed while emergency services worked. The threat was called off at 12:21.
A LOT spokesman said no suspicious items were found on the plane. After border checks, the airline took the passengers to Chopin by bus.
Warsaw Chopin airport got a warning about a potentially dangerous item on board SAS flight SK751 from Copenhagen. The plane took off at about 8:15 local time and landed roughly an hour later. One runway was closed under standard security rules, said Piotr Rudzki, acting director of the airport's communications office.
"The passengers got off, the plane landed normally, there was no emergency landing," said SAS spokeswoman Alexandra Lindgren Kaoku. The airline is looking after the passengers and crew, and the case has been passed to Polish police.
In Spain, a large security operation awaited a Ryanair plane from Manchester to Murcia with 114 passengers and 7 crew members. Emergency teams surrounded the plane, and everyone on board was taken off during the check. The Civil Guard ruled out any explosives, and the airport is working normally, said Francisco Lucas, the government delegate for the Murcia region.
One passenger on the flight said the plane stopped quite suddenly after landing and was surrounded by fire engines, police and bomb disposal experts. Only later were passengers told that there had been a real threat against the plane itself.
Two Ryanair flights to Rome's Fiumicino airport, from Lisbon and Dublin, were also affected. On both, an email warned of a bomb on board, and police bomb disposal officers checked the passengers, crew and luggage. Italian fighter jets escorted the Dublin plane to the airport, an official said.
