March 2026 brought some interesting news for the Bulgarian economy. According to data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI), the overall business climate indicator noted a decrease of 3.8 points compared to February, dropping from 17.4% to 13.6%. What lies behind these figures? And how will they affect the average person?
Industry: Mixed Signals
The industrial sector is reporting a slight decline - the business climate indicator decreased by 1.3 points, reaching 15.0%. The reasons? Industrial entrepreneurs are more cautious in their assessments of the current situation. Yet, there are also positive moments. Production is secured with orders, and production activity is expected to increase over the next three months. Is this enough to compensate for the uncertainty?
The main problems faced by companies in the industry remain familiar - uncertainty in the economic environment and a lack of labor. In the last month, the first factor proved particularly significant. How will these uncertainties affect prices? Managers predict an increase in sales prices over the next three months. Construction: Stability in the Face of Uncertainty
Unlike the industry, the construction sector is holding its position. The business climate indicator remains almost unchanged - from 14.4% to 14.1%. Construction entrepreneurs are satisfied with their current work and are optimistic about the next three months. What exactly supports this sector? The main difficulties here are the same as in the industry - uncertainty in the economy, the shortage of labor, and the prices of materials. Most builders do not expect a change in sales prices.
Retail: Decline in Confidence
The largest drop is observed in retail. The business climate indicator fell by a remarkable 6.9 points, from 28.6% to 21.7%. The reason? Retailers are less optimistic about the current state of business. They see negative trends in sales for the last three months, although they expect an improvement in the next three. Competition, an uncertain economy, and reduced demand are the main obstacles to business.
Interestingly, more and more retailers, 34.1%, expect a price increase in the coming months. Does this mean that consumers will have to pay more for goods and services? Or are retailers preparing for other challenges?
Service Sector: Cooling Enthusiasm
And finally, but not least, is the service sector. Here, the business climate indicator notes a drop of 9.6 points, dropping to only 2.0%. Managers are more reserved in their assessments of the current state and future prospects. Reduced demand for services, but expectations for improvement in the next three months.
