Bulgaria modernizes its naval forces in partnership with NATO

Minister of Defense Dimitar Stoyanov signed a key Memorandum of Understanding between Bulgaria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The agreement provides for the acquisition of seven mine-countermeasure ships, which will strengthen the country's defensive potential in the Black Sea.

"Security in the Black Sea has a huge impact on Euro-Atlantic security, and Bulgaria strives to be a reliable ally," stated Minister Stoyanov.

New security missions in the Black Sea

In addition to the acquisition of new vessels, Bulgaria signed an amendment to the Memorandum with Romania and Turkey regarding the Mine Countermeasure Naval Group in the Black Sea. A critically important task is being added to the existing functions:

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance to protect critical underwater infrastructure.
  • Ensuring the safety of strategic energy and communication links.

These steps are a response to the dynamic security environment and strengthen Bulgaria's role as a key partner on the Alliance's eastern flank.
