As part of their deepening bilateral defense cooperation, Bulgaria and the Netherlands discussed a range of strategic issues during a meeting between Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov and the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Arthur den Hartog. The talks focused on the modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces, the strengthening of collective security in Europe, and the current needs of the army for additional air policing capabilities.

Minister Stoyanov officially confirmed to the diplomat the country's commitment to ensuring the necessary protection of its skies while awaiting new equipment: "We have sent an inquiry to the Dutch side regarding the possibility of leasing up to 8 F-16 aircraft for a period up to 2030, and we look forward to your response," he stated. This request was prompted by a potential delay announced in mid-August by Lockheed Martin, suggesting that the second batch of eight F-16 Block 70 fighters might only arrive in the second quarter of 2030. As an additional measure, the Minister recalled the successful joint mission of 2022 and extended an invitation to organize a new joint air policing project.

A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to the Naval Forces, with confirmation that the first of a total of seven minehunter vessels, provided jointly by Belgium and the Netherlands, is expected to arrive in Bulgaria no later than October. Minister Stoyanov expressed his gratitude for the ships, as well as the accompanying auxiliary equipment and spare parts, highlighting their critical role in mine countermeasures in the Black Sea. For his part, Ambassador Arthur den Hartog emphasized his country's contribution to ensuring safe shipping in the region.

Beyond specific acquisitions, the discussions also touched upon a broader spectrum of Bulgaria's NATO commitments:

  • Measures taken by the government for the comprehensive modernization of the Armed Forces.
  • Issues related to support for Ukraine and cooperation in the field of cybersecurity.
  • Development of military education and personnel training.
  • Strengthening of allied deterrence and interoperability.
