The Cinelibri 2026 international film and literature festival closes in Burgas with two screenings at the NHK Culture Centre: "Fatherland" on Saturday, 7 November, and "Water for the Flowers" on Sunday, 8 November. Both start at 7pm.
Cinelibri brings film and literature together and shows screen adaptations. Both films are about painful memories of the past and hope for the future.
"Fatherland" is a historical drama by Pawel Pawlikowski, who won an Oscar for "Ida". Set in 1949, it follows writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika as they return to Germany from exile and travel across the divided country. On the way, they face the past and the scars of war.
Its themes are guilt, memory and belonging in postwar Europe. The film looks at personal and shared responsibility, family, and a past that people cannot escape. The cast includes Sandra Hüller, Hans Zischler, August Diehl and Joanna Kulig.
"Water for the Flowers" is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who made "Amélie", and is based on the worldwide bestseller by Valérie Perrin. It is about loss, love and the beauty of life after hardship.
Its heroine, Violette Trenet, keeps a cemetery in Burgundy. Her life is quiet and lonely, but full of deep feeling and untold stories. Through memories, other people's fates and unexpected meetings, she rediscovers love, trust and hope. Leïla Bekhti, Melvil Poupaud and Matthias Schoenaerts star.
