Libraries, chitalishte community centres, schools and museums in Burgas region invite children and families to "Fairy-Tale Night at the Library" on 31 October and 1 November. The events mark Bulgarian Enlighteners' Day.

This is the third year of the event. It backs Burgas's bid to be European Capital of Culture in 2032.

The regional chitalishte council of the Union of Chitalishte, the national union of community cultural centres, organises the night. The regional governor and Burgas council are its patrons. Kindergartens, personal development centres, the Peyo Yavorov Regional Library, the Regional History Museum and other cultural and education bodies in the region also take part.

Each body is preparing its own programme of games, surprises, creative activities and challenges. Libraries will become the stage for a fairy-tale carnival, where books "come alive" and storybook characters greet visitors. Children, parents and all book lovers are invited.

Events take place on 31 October and on 1 November, which is Enlighteners' Day. Where they can, institutions will also hold events in the days around those dates.

This year the night marks the holiday, 170 years of the chitalishte movement in Bulgaria and 115 years since the Union of Chitalishte was founded. The organisers say Enlighteners' Day is a time to honour writers, teachers and others who contributed to culture, education and national identity.

The organisers want to spark an interest in reading from the earliest age, make books an experience for the whole family and bring local communities into cultural life. They say libraries and chitalishte are not just places that store books, but living centres of learning, creativity and contact that keep the Bulgarian spirit alive and link generations.

In October we reported that the first Korean reading room in Bulgaria will open on 5 November at the Peyo Yavorov Regional Library. It is called Window on Korea and is part of Korea Day.

Each institution will post its programme on its own page. Details are also available at the libraries.
