A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook the Greek island of Zakynthos early on Sunday, 25 October, at 07:15 local time, the Geodynamic Institute in Athens said.
The tremor woke people on the island and was also felt in the regions of Ilia and Achaea on the Peloponnese in western Greece. No injuries or damage have been reported so far.
The epicentre was in the Ionian Sea, 24 km south-east of Zakynthos, at 37.6515° north and 21.1208° east. Greek seismology services confirmed the magnitude and location.
The institute in Athens recorded the quake at 05:15:44 GMT.
The institute's revised estimate puts the focus at a depth of about 20 km. Another Greek estimate puts it slightly shallower, at 19 km below the surface.
Zakynthos lies in the Ionian Sea, west of mainland Greece. The institute's official register has detailed data on seismic activity. The area around the island is highly active, among the most seismically active zones in Greece, and quakes there are fairly common.
