NIMH expects sunny periods, but also brief showers with thunderstorms in the mountains, eastern regions, and along the Black Sea coast.

Sunday, August 9, will begin with more sunny hours, but during the day the atmosphere over the country will become unstable. NIMH forecasts the development of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds, with brief showers and thunderstorms – before noon mainly in the northwestern regions, and in the afternoon in the mountains and Eastern Bulgaria.

Weather in Burgas and the region

In Burgas, the minimum temperature will be around 23°C, and the maximum – up to 31°C. Variable cloudiness is expected, with a possibility of brief rain and thunderstorm activity, especially in the afternoon. NIMH does not publish a percentage probability for the precipitation, but the risk for the area can be defined as moderate.

The seawater temperature near Burgas will be around 25–26°C. A moderate north to northeasterly wind will blow at a speed of approximately 5–8 m/s, which may temporarily strengthen near thunderstorm cells. The preliminary safety assessment for swimming is a yellow flag due to the possibility of thunderstorms and variable conditions near the shore.

Sofia and the region

In Sofia, the minimum temperature will be around 15°C, and the maximum – around 30°C. Variable cloudiness and the possibility of a brief afternoon shower are expected, with a higher risk in the mountainous areas around the capital. The wind will be light to moderate, coming primarily from the northeast.

For Sofia and the interior of the country, seawater temperature and swimming flags do not apply. When visiting reservoirs, rivers, or unguarded bodies of water, extra caution is necessary during thunderstorms.

Eastern and Western Bulgaria

In Western Bulgaria, there will be more sun in the morning, but brief showers with thunderstorms are possible in the northwestern regions even before noon. Daytime temperatures will be approximately between 29°C and 33°C, with a light to moderate northeasterly wind.

In Eastern Bulgaria, more significant development of cumulonimbus clouds is expected in the afternoon. There will be brief showers and thunderstorms in some areas, and maximum temperatures will most often be between 30°C and 32°C. The wind will be moderate from the north-northeast and may temporarily strengthen in open areas.

In the mountains

Before noon, there will be sunny periods in the mountains, but in the afternoon, cloudiness will increase and brief rain, accompanied by thunder, will fall in many places. The wind on the ridges will be moderate from the northeast, with a risk of sudden strengthening during storms.

Temperatures will be lower compared to the flat regions, but the exact values depend on the altitude. Seawater temperature and swimming flags do not apply to the mountains; tourists should stop hiking along open ridges when approaching thunderstorm clouds.

Black Sea coast

Along the Black Sea coast, there will be sunny hours, but in the afternoon, cumulonimbus clouds with brief showers and thunderstorms will develop in many places. Maximum temperatures will be between 29°C and 32°C, and the seawater – around 25–26°C.

A moderate northerly wind will blow, and the sea state will be 2–3 degrees. The preliminary assessment for the beaches along the coast is a yellow flag: swimming should be stopped in the event of thunderstorms, increased wind, or instructions from lifeguards.
