St Anastasia Island, Sozopol and Beglik Tash above Primorsko are among the places where Stefan Valdobrev and his band The Usual Suspects recorded their new project, "The Acoustics of Bulgaria". Valdobrev told Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) that the song "Anchor and Kite" was recorded in the Burgas region and will be out soon.

Three singles from the album are already out. The latest, "Tomorrow Is Already Yesterday", was recorded at places in his home town of Stara Zagora that matter to him. He believes the song has already been a big success, and it is among the entries in the BNR top 20.

The tracks are recorded on location, in settings whose sound was shaped by history and nature. Valdobrev says the idea came to him while he was travelling around Bulgaria, and that it was inspired by the mystical link between music and place. The project is the result of many years of inspiration from his travels and from meeting the country's cultural heritage.

Sozopol is the town of his childhood: the summer camps, Kavatsite beach and, later, Apollonia, from his school years.

Beglik Tash is tied to Valdobrev's wife, whose parents come from the area. "Beglik Tash because it is above Primorsko, and there I had a huge, great love of mine, whom we later married," he said.

The island is part of the project because of the wonderful concerts Valdobrev and the band have given there lately. "It is such an inspiring, special place, unlike anything else, that we simply had to include it," he said.

The Usual Suspects members on the recordings are Stoyan Yankulov-Stundzhi, Veselin Veselinov-Eko, Ivan Lechev and Miroslav Ivanov. Guest musicians play the kaval, tambura, gadulka, tapan and bagpipe, and there are female folk vocals too.

The project is large, with both music and multimedia. A CD, a photo album with the author's own texts, a documentary film and a concert tour are still to come.
