Dumbbell lunges are a strength exercise targeting the quadriceps - the muscles at the front of the thighs. The execution technique involves standing upright with slightly bent knees, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Then, take a step forward with the left leg, lowering down into a lunge while keeping the torso upright. The movement is then repeated with the right leg to complete one full cycle.
It is important during the exercise that the knee of the supporting leg does not extend forward past the toes, to avoid excessive strain on the knee joint. This exercise requires good balance, so it is not recommended for people with coordination problems. It is also recommended to maintain an upright position of the head and back, without allowing the back to arch.
Dumbbell lunges are suitable for beginners, as long as the technique and recommendations for safe execution are carefully followed. They engage not only the quadriceps, but also other muscles such as the calf, gluteal muscles, hamstring, and popliteal tendons.
