A plane flying from Dublin to Rome was diverted this morning and landed at France's Évreux air base after a bomb alert, the office of French prime minister Sébastien Lecornu said.

The plane is an Airbus A320. The prime minister's office said it is following the case in real time and with maximum caution.

The alert is the latest in a wave of anonymous hoax bomb threats against planes over Europe. An investigation into the coordinated threats is under way.

On Monday, a Wizz Air plane flying from London Luton to Bulgaria also received a direct threat of a terror attack. A fighter jet on full combat alert was sent up and escorted the plane to a safe landing.

Airports across Europe have run emergency security checks in recent days. Dozens of planes have been forced to make emergency landings. Fighter jets escorted some of them, and at major airports explosives experts searched aircraft for hours.

At least 7 flights received threats yesterday morning. Two of the planes that made emergency landings had taken off from airports in the UK. Some flights were diverted to other airports, where anti-terror and bomb disposal teams were waiting. A Ryanair plane from Dublin to Rome flew with an Italian fighter jet as escort.

At Rome's Fiumicino airport, two Ryanair planes were searched for hours yesterday, one from Lisbon and the other from Dublin. The search began after airport staff received anonymous tips that a bomb had been planted on board.
