A heavy lorry overturned this afternoon on the Trakia motorway near the Trayanovi Vrata tunnel. Drivers caught in the jam say traffic towards Plovdiv and Burgas has almost completely stopped.
The lorry lies across the carriageway from Sofia, blocking other vehicles. A witness sent footage from the motorway showing a long line of cars and lorries behind it, already a kilometre long.
First reports say the lorry overturned after a manoeuvre. It has not been officially established whether the driver lost control or whether there were other causes.
A police team is at the scene and securing the stretch. No injuries have been confirmed, and details are still being checked.
This section of the motorway is often busy, especially on Friday afternoons, when many people leave Sofia for other parts of the country. The crash adds to delays for drivers heading to Plovdiv, Stara Zagora and Burgas.
Drivers who still have to pass through the area can follow updates from the Road Infrastructure Agency on when traffic will move again.
The lorry will be towed away with special equipment to clear the road.
