Sofia city prosecutors have charged Turkish citizen Eyup Temiz with the premeditated murder of businessman Slavi Binev and will seek to keep him in custody, prosecutor Nikolay Nikolaev said. Binev died from a gunshot at his home at around 10am yesterday.

In the first hours after the shooting in Sofia's Pavlovo district, investigators looked for the cause in unsettled money matters and thought the dispute may have flared up on the spur of the moment. Prosecutors now name a dispute over a property tied to a large construction investment as one of the main lines of inquiry.

Prosecutors say Temiz fired the shot himself. "There is enough evidence that he deliberately killed the victim, Binev, with one shot to the face," Nikolaev told BNT.

Two other people, a Turkish and a Bulgarian citizen, were also detained. They are the main witnesses in the case and have already given statements before a judge. They described in detail everything from the moment they entered Binev's home to the arrest of the three men. Nikolaev said the facts of the case rest largely on these statements.

Minutes before his arrest, Temiz tried to get rid of the pistol, the prosecutor said. The weapon was found and added to the case file. The file shows it was legally owned. Nikolaev did not say for now whether it is registered in Bulgaria or Turkey.

Besides the witness statements, prosecutors have security camera footage, gunpowder residue swabs and a ballistic examination of the weapon.

Temiz and Binev have known each other for more than 30 years through taekwondo and were friends. "We can say for sure that the two knew each other well and had business ties," Nikolaev said.

Temiz's wife is an architect and construction developer, and a business partner of Binev in one of his companies. Asked about their shared company, the prosecutor said there is information pointing that way, but no conclusions can be drawn for now, so as not to hamper the investigation.
