NATO invests in the modernization of "Bezmer" and "Vrazhdebna" air bases

The "Bezmer" and "Vrazhdebna" air bases will be modernized and further developed as key sites for the reception and support of NATO allied forces, after the Council of Ministers approved additional requirements to the Program Plan for increasing their operational capabilities.

The decision gives the green light for the implementation of new infrastructure projects and facilities at the two air bases, which will be financed under the NATO Security Investment Program (NSIP). Thus, the airfields must be brought into compliance with modern Alliance standards for air basing and, if necessary, be able to receive allied aircraft, equipment, and military units.

The government emphasizes that the planned investments are part of broader efforts to strengthen the defensive capabilities of NATO's eastern flank and to improve interoperability between the Bulgarian armed forces and Alliance partners. The modernization is expected to increase the readiness of the "Bezmer" and "Vrazhdebna" air bases to participate in joint operations, exercises, and collective defense missions.

The NSIP program is NATO's primary instrument for financing strategic military infrastructure on the territory of member states. Through it, air bases, communication and information systems, logistics centers, and other key facilities necessary for carrying out deterrence and defense tasks are built and renovated.

According to the government decision, all planned activities at "Bezmer" and "Vrazhdebna" will be covered by funds from the NATO program, without requiring additional funding from the state budget.
