Europe's educational map is transforming as Bulgarian students become increasingly pragmatic, seeking alignment between their academic interests, financial capabilities, and long-term plans, according to an analysis by the educational consultancy house "Darby," organizer of the "Study Abroad" exhibition (which will begin admissions from 2027). Instead of focusing solely on a single "prestigious" destination, young people are weighing factors such as cost, language, access to specific majors, and job prospects after graduation.
Traditional destinations like the UK and Germany are no longer the only benchmarks. The UK has become less accessible following Brexit due to visa procedures and international fees, while the Netherlands is taking steps to manage the number of international students and expand English-language programs.
Countries offering a variety of programs, including those in English, such as Italy, Spain, France, and Austria, are coming to the forefront. Scandinavian countries continue to attract attention with their innovative educational models and the strong link between universities and the labor market. However, with them, the specifics of the social model must be considered: since higher education is supported by public funding, the state aligns the number of places and program structures with the needs of the national economy and opportunities for local students. This may lead to more limited access for international applicants to certain majors, without affecting the high quality or international appeal of the universities.
The "Study Abroad" exhibition will take place on the following dates and locations:
- September 19 – at "Interpred," Sofia
- September 26 – in Burgas
- September 27 – in Varna
The shift in priorities is also reflected in how specific majors are perceived. While two decades ago medicine, law, and architecture were seen as guaranteed tickets to a career, today's youth seek intersections between different fields—for example, business and technology, economics and data, medicine and biotechnology, or design and digital media. The new prospective student is not looking for a "job for life," but rather a combination of skills that will allow them to switch roles, industries, and countries. A degree is no longer viewed as a final destination, but as a platform for future choices. Consequently, more and more students are beginning to plan their applications as early as the ninth or tenth grade, turning the choice of their high school profile into a strategic decision.
This new approach is driven by the fact that university is no longer just the next step after high school, but the first major investment in one's personal biography. "The Bulgarian student is significantly more mobile, informed, and pragmatic: they are interested not only in what they will study, but where that education will take them," experts explain. Unlike 20 years ago, when a degree was a symbol of social status, today's student values international environments, practical internships, and the opportunity to work during their studies.
In the context of the future, professions will be defined by the ability to collaborate with artificial intelligence. AI is already changing the daily lives of programmers, financiers, lawyers, designers, doctors, and engineers, and over the next 10-20 years, this interaction will become the standard. In addition to computer science, robotics, cybersecurity, and data science, biotechnology, medicine, green energy, climate technology, and engineering specialties will move to the forefront. Educational consultants note a paradox: "The more intelligent machines become, the more valuable human qualities will be—critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to communicate and make decisions in situations where there is no ready-made algorithm." A future profession may not just be an "AI profession," but one where a person knows how to use technology better than others.
The flexibility of the American model also offers new opportunities, allowing students to combine a major with a minor—for example, business with AI, or economics with psychology. Similar liberal and interdisciplinary models are also offered in Europe through universities with American structures, dual degrees, and exchange semesters. This allows a student to begin their education in one country, gain experience in a third market, and graduate with connections that do not limit them to a single national labor market.
Looking toward 2040, education will be measured by the ability to apply and update knowledge. According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, by 2030, 39 percent of the key skills used today are expected to change or become obsolete, and 59 out of every 100 workers will need retraining. The "degree for life" is giving way to the capacity for lifelong learning. For the next generation, analytical thinking, digital and AI literacy, data work, and cybersecurity will be fundamental, but curiosity, adaptability, and emotional intelligence will remain just as important. Employers are already prioritizing analytical thinking, adding creativity, leadership, and social interaction as critical competencies.
All of this makes the choice of profiling subjects as early as the tenth grade decisive. Mathematics and informatics lead to engineering and AI; biology and chemistry to medicine and biotechnology; and languages and social sciences to humanities and international specialties. "It is particularly important that more and more universities look not just at overall success, but at the specific preparation of the candidate and the alignment between the subjects studied and the chosen program," the consultants emphasize. Early career guidance is not a requirement for determining a lifelong career, but a way to understand the opportunities each choice provides and to turn the final year of school into a well-planned start toward university.
