Burgas Zoo has welcomed an exotic pair of cassowaries, which are now available for visitors to observe. These new inhabitants are characterized by their large bodies, powerful wings, long tails, and distinctive large beaks; they also produce a specific, loud noise during flight due to the unique structure of their flight feathers. In the wild, this species is found in New Guinea and its neighboring islands.
Since the pair consists of sexually mature male and female specimens, the zoo team hopes they will adapt successfully and produce a new generation in the future. Successful breeding would provide specialists with the unique opportunity to closely observe the exceptionally interesting and characteristic behavior of these birds during their nesting period. The breeding process itself is quite curious: the female settles into a hollow where the entrance is almost completely closed, leaving only a single narrow opening. Through this hole, the male brings her food, and once the chicks hatch, he continues to care for them in the same manner.
To ensure optimal conditions for these heat-loving cassowaries, a special space has been prepared, including a winter house and a summer garden. The new birds have been housed in an aviary that features both indoor and outdoor sections, with all conditions tailored to their natural needs. The exotic birds' menu is equally impressive, with mango, papaya, grapes, and melon among their favorite foods.
With the arrival of these new inhabitants, Burgas Zoo further enriches the diversity of species in its collection.
