More victims have filed complaints against a 24-year-old man from Kameno who is charged with extorting people through consumer loans, Burgas regional police said. They are joining an investigation led by the district police station in Kameno.
Police detained and charged the man, and Burgas District Court ordered him held in custody for up to 48 hours. He is now in the regional arrest unit at Burgas prison.
Where it began: Man, 24, from Kameno stays in custody, charged with extortion over loans
Police say the man, who has a criminal record, made people take out consumer loans in their own names from various banks and lenders and give him the money. In return, he promised to pay the instalments himself. Some victims took out more than one loan.
When they came to him about the payments, he threatened them or physically harmed them, police say. Investigators established beyond doubt that he used coercion and extortion to get money and property for himself.
Officers from the criminal police department at the regional directorate and the Kameno station carried out the arrest, helped by the specialised police forces unit. Burgas District Prosecutor's Office oversaw and directed the operation. Police questioned many witnesses and carried out searches and seizures.
Investigators are looking into everything the accused man did.
