Bulgaria's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has raised its warning for Burgas region from yellow to red because of heavy rain and strong north winds at sea. The red code, the highest level, covers Tsarevo, Primorsko and Malko Tarnovo municipalities.
NIMH says more than 65 mm of rain will fall in the Burgas area today, Wednesday, 4 November. The three red-code municipalities will be hit hardest. The rest of the region is under an orange code, and only Ruen remains on yellow, the lowest level.
Rain will fall almost all day in the east and in some mountain areas. Before noon it will be heavy at times, mostly along the southern Black Sea coast. By evening it will stop almost everywhere.
A north wind will blow at sea, with gusts of 15–20 m/s. Beyond the bays, waves will rise to 4–5 on the scale, and along the shore they will be 3 to 5. In the east the wind will be moderate to strong from the north-northeast and will ease towards evening. In the rest of the country it will be light.
The Black Sea coast will be cloudy, with highs of 12 to 14C, and about 13C in Burgas. Lows will reach 11C, and the sea is 16–17C.
Across the country, the lowest temperatures today will be 5 to 11C, with about 5C in Sofia. In the daytime most places will see 8 to 15C, and about 8C in the capital.
The sky over the mountains will be mostly cloudy. Rain will fall mainly in the eastern ranges and in places in Rila and Pirin, with snow on higher ground. The wind there will also be moderate to strong from the north-northeast. At 1,200 metres daytime temperatures will be about 6C, and at 2,000 metres about zero.
Thursday will be mostly cloudy, with showers mainly in the western mountains. The wind will ease and blow from the northwest, and from the north along the Black Sea coast. Lows will be 4 to 9C and highs 9 to 14C.
On Friday the clouds will break up and many areas will be mostly sunny.
On 3 November we reported that NIMH had raised its warning for Burgas region from yellow to orange for Wednesday because of heavy rain. Forecasters expected 20 to 35 mm of rain in the region overnight, and up to 60 mm in places.
Over the weekend it will be sunny in the mountains. In the lowlands and valleys there will be fog or low layered cloud until noon. Morning temperatures will fall close to zero, and daytime temperatures will barely change. On Sunday the wind will die down across most of the country.
