Bulgaria's weather service has raised its warning for the Burgas region from yellow to orange for Wednesday, 4 November, because of heavy rain.
Orange is the second level of danger and yellow, which the service first issued, is the first. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) says orange warnings also apply to Yambol and Sliven. A yellow warning for heavy rain covers Varna, Dobrich, Silistra, Ruse, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Targovishte, Razgrad and Shumen.
Overnight, 20 to 35 mm of rain will fall in the Burgas region, and up to 60 mm in places. Over the sea, north winds will gust at 15 to 20 m/s. Outside the bays, waves will build to force 4–5.
Eastern areas will see spells of strong, heavy rain during the night. After midnight the rain will ease and stop, first in the south-west of the country. The wind will be light from the north-north-east, and moderate to strong in the east. Lows will be 5 to 10 degrees, 12–14 degrees on the Black Sea coast and about 5 in Sofia.
On Wednesday the rain in the Burgas region will ease and then stop. The coast will be cloudy, with spells of strong, heavy rain before noon, mainly in the south. A moderate to strong north-north-east wind will blow, and the sea will be at force 3 to 5. Highs by the sea will be 12 to 14 degrees, and the water will be 16 to 17 degrees.
The rest of the country will be cloudy. Some mountain and eastern areas will have rain almost all day, heavy in places before noon. By evening the rain will stop almost everywhere. The wind will be light, but moderate to strong from the north-north-east in the east, easing in the evening in eastern Bulgaria. Highs in most places will be between 8 and 13 degrees, and about 8 in Sofia and the surrounding area.
Burgas was also under an orange warning for torrential rain on Monday, 2 November. On 3 November NIMH issued an orange warning for heavy rain in the Burgas region, while Varna, Dobrich, Smolyan, Kardzhali and Haskovo were under a red warning.
The mountains will be mostly cloudy, with a moderate to strong north-north-east wind. Rain will fall almost all day in the ranges of eastern Bulgaria and in places in Rila and Pirin, and snow will fall at higher levels. It will be about 6 degrees at 1,200 metres and about 0 at 2,000 metres.
