Living Marine Heritage in Focus in Burgas

At the beginning of September, Burgas will host a prestigious international conference under the auspices of UNESCO, dedicated to "Marine Heritage and Fishing Traditions: Communities, Policies, and Sustainable Development." The event will take place on September 3rd at "Chengene Skele" and on September 4th at the Ethnographic Museum.

The forum aims to integrate living fishing practices into modern policies for cultural tourism and sustainable development.

Participants and Organizers

The event is being realized in partnership between the Municipality of Burgas, the Regional Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, the "Burgas 2032" Foundation, and the Regional Historical Museum. The discussions will include scholars from Southeast Europe and representatives of organizations from Bulgaria, Turkey, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine, and Italy.

Main topics of the forum:

  • Documentation and analysis of traditional fishing practices;
  • New forms of presenting heritage through museums and exhibitions;
  • Integration of cultural heritage into the economy of seaside cities;
  • Support for Burgas' candidacy for European Capital of Culture.

The conference will conclude with the formulation of key recommendations for establishing Burgas as a modern cultural center that preserves the traditions of the Black Sea region.
