Michelle Obama, who previously led the Let's Move! campaign to promote physical activity and healthy eating in children, is now joining as a co-founder of the company PLEZi Nutrition. The new company will offer the market healthy alternatives to carbonated drinks and unhealthy foods that are widespread among young consumers.
According to Obama, in order to change the rules of the game in the food industry, it is necessary to find a way to get inside it, rather than just standing on the sidelines. That's why she decides to actively engage in the development and offering of more beneficial products for children.
The first product of PLEZi Nutrition is a sugar-free children's drink that aims to replace carbonated drinks. Each 237 ml bottle contains only 35 calories, with the main ingredients being water, fruit juices, and stevia leaf extract. The drinks will be sold at a price of around $3.89 for a pack of four.
According to statistics, about 20% of children and teenagers in the USA suffer from obesity. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors offer drug treatment for overweight children from the age of 12, and for teenagers aged 13 and over with severe obesity, to refer them to a surgeon for evaluation for possible bariatric surgery.
Michelle Obama hopes that with the entry of PLEZi Nutrition into the market, it will provoke a leadership competition that will transform the entire food industry towards healthier products for young consumers.
