A public lecture in Burgas will distinguish between the scientific and the sensational in Thracology. Innovative digital approaches will also be presented.

The topic of the ancient Thracians and their rich cultural heritage has long been one of the hottest and most discussed issues in Bulgarian society. It intrigues not only established academic circles but also numerous popularizers of alternative and often unprovable hypotheses. Against this complex backdrop, where the line between proven knowledge and sensational interpretations is often blurred, an important debate is being set, which will be the focus of an upcoming public lecture.

On September 12, 2025, at 6:00 PM, at the branch of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in Burgas, located in the NHK Cultural Center, the ground floor of the building will become the arena for this key scientific dialogue. The meeting with the public will be led by two distinguished figures from the Faculty of History at Sofia University – Professor Dilyana Boteva, D.Sc., and Assoc. Professor Yulia Tsvetkova, Ph.D.

Ancient Thracians – Between Science and Sensation

During the lecture, titled "Ancient Thracians – Between Science and Sensation", the two scholars will present not just facts but modern and innovative approaches to the study of Thracian culture. A special emphasis will be placed on the increasingly significant application of digital technologies, which are changing the way researchers discover and analyze new aspects of the Thracian heritage. These technologies allow scientists to view history from a different, data-enriched and visual perspective.

The lecture will also address an extremely important question: how to distinguish scientifically substantiated facts from speculative theories that are often spread in the public space. In an era where access to information is unlimited, the ability to critically evaluate sources becomes increasingly essential. By presenting verifiable data and a comprehensive, scientifically based vision of ancient Thracian culture, the lecture aims to offer a strong alternative to sensational, often misleading interpretations.

The initiative, which has free admission, is part of a series of events at the Burgas branch of Sofia University aimed at promoting contemporary scientific achievements. By opening its doors to the general public, the academic community seeks to demonstrate the importance of science to society and to encourage an informed public debate on topics of high historical and cultural value. The event is expected to attract not only students and academics but also a wide range of citizens who are captivated by the secrets of the ancient Thracians.
