At the beginning of May, the Bulgarian Black Sea coast already has clean beaches, is setting up sunbeds, and opening establishments. The first tourists are present, but the big influx and consistently warm weather are expected at the end of May and throughout June.

The beginning of May for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is not just a calendar transition to a warmer season – it is a real start of visible preparations for summer 2026. Along the coast in resorts like Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol, Pomorie, and Golden Sands, machinery has already passed over the sand, the bulk of winter waste has been hauled away, and the first rows of sunbeds and umbrellas are being set up. Some of the seaside bars and restaurants are already operating on weekends and welcoming the first, more adventurous guests.

While the official beach season traditionally starts around June 1, the reality on the ground shows that preparations this year are visibly accelerated. Pressure from early bookings for June, an expected stronger season, and the desire of businesses to "take a bite" out of the first wave of tourists are driving many concessionaires and hoteliers to be ready as early as the first half of the month.

Beaches at the beginning of May: cleaner, but still "in progress"

On the large strips of Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Kabakum, Kranevo, and the southern beaches near Sozopol and Lozenets, many locals are already noticing a palpable difference compared to March and April. The sand is leveled, visible waste has been removed, and a large portion of the lifeguard towers have been installed, although the teams will enter at full capacity closer to June.

The zones for paid sunbeds and umbrellas are gradually taking shape – currently, many of them are partially arranged so as to serve the first tourists during the May weekends. Free zones are also being marked more clearly, and in some places, new wooden walkways, ramps, and signs are already being placed. The full "picture of the season," however, will be seen only towards the end of the month, when all facilities and services are fully put into operation.

Bars and restaurants: trial weekends and preparation for full capacity

At the beginning of May, there is already clear activity along the coastal promenades. Some establishments – especially in the larger resorts and the old town parts of Nessebar, Sozopol, and Pomorie – are operating daily, while others are opening for now only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. These are the so-called "soft openings," where the menu, service, and new staff are being tested.

Owners use this period to finish repairs, renovate interiors, replace equipment, and train newly hired employees. Many of the seasonal workers are just now arriving at the seaside, and some of the teams are being formed precisely during these first May weeks. The expectation is that by the end of May, most establishments along key promenades and beach strips will be operating at nearly full capacity.

The first tourists are already here – but the big wave is yet to come

Already in the first days of May, the first foreign languages can be heard along the Black Sea coast – early guests from Romania, Poland, Germany, as well as traditional weekend trips by Bulgarians from the interior of the country. Hoteliers report better occupancy during holidays and weekends compared to the same period a few years ago, but this is still not the "mass" season.

The main influx is expected at the end of May and the beginning of June, when charter programs and package holidays begin more intensively. It is for this period that business efforts are aimed – for beaches to be fully equipped and for all key establishments and services to operate without interruption. By mid-June, the Black Sea coast is expected to be in a classic "summer busy" mode.

What does the weather say at the beginning of May?

The meteorological picture at the beginning of May is typically spring-like: daytime temperatures along the coast in the 16–22 degree range, with cooler evenings and nights. The days are longer, the sun is noticeably stronger, but the sea breeze reminds us that real summer has not yet arrived. This is an ideal time for walks, short breaks, and "trial" weekends at the sea, but not for mass beach tourism.

The sea water temperature is still relatively low – around 15–17 degrees, depending on the area and the recent days. Swimmers are more of an exception than a rule, and families with children during this period usually rely on heated pools or spa services. A more visible warming of the sea is expected towards the end of May, when the air will also consistently stay above 22–24 degrees.

Does the weather favor an early start to the season?

The beginning of May is more of a transitional period – warm enough for coffee on a terrace with a sea view, but still cool for the typical "heat" on the beach. What the weather does perfectly is provide businesses the opportunity to finish preparations without extreme heat and without mass pressure from tourists. For early guests, the combination of lower prices, quieter beaches, and fewer people is a serious advantage.

For the large tourist flow, however, the end of May and June remain key. If the forecasts for stable warming are confirmed, the first true "summer" days – with full beaches, warm sea, and evening walks along the promenades – will arrive as early as the first half of June. Until then, the Black Sea coast is in a mode of accelerated preparation and gradually increasing activity.

What should tourists planning a vacation now expect?

Those who decide to spend May on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast can count on a more relaxed atmosphere, easier parking, more attention from staff, and often better accommodation prices. The downsides are the cooler water, a more limited choice of operating establishments in smaller resorts, and the still-unfinished preparation of some beach zones.

For a classic summer vacation with swimming, active nightlife, and full infrastructure, the periods from the second half of June to the end of August remain most suitable. But for those who value silence and the view of the sea more than the degrees of the water, the beginning of May and the entire month of June are the ideal time to see the Black Sea coast "in a shirt," before it puts on its full summer suit.
